In the third week of filings for political party primary elections, the first contested race has developed, for the office of 77th district judge.
The race is a Democratic Primary rematch between incumbent Judge Dick Black and Mexia attorney Amy Thomas.
Black out polled Mrs. Thomas in the 1996 primary, then went on to beat a Republican challenger in the general election.
The 77th State Judicial District serves Freestone and Limestone counties.
Political primary elections are set for March 4, 2008.
Filings for the primaries opened Dec. 3 and close on Jan 2.
Although all county offices have a candidate, only the 77th Judicial District post has generated a contest in the primaries.
Signed up with the Democratic Party are Sheriff Ralph Billings, Tax Assessor Lisa James, county commissioner Stanley Gregory, precinct three, and constables Buck Bonner in precinct one, Lynn Clary in precinct two, L.B. Gamble in precinct three and Ken Sessions in precinct four.
All the county Democratic candidates are incumbents.
Filed for the Republican Primary are incumbent county commissioner Luke Ward, precinct one, and Chris Martin, seeking the office of county attorney.
Opting out of the 2008 election is incumbent County Attorney Keith Meredith, a Democrat.
Ballots next year are headed by presidential primaries, which may already be decided by the time Texas votes are cast. A total of 37 states will conduct presidential primaries before Texas.
