- After a 2-hour closed session with Fairfield Independent School District trustees last week, athletic director and head football coach David Haynes tendered his resignation Tuesday.
During the Fairfield high school boys’ athletic period Thursday the coach told his players that he planned to resign.
“I talked to the kids Thursday. I wanted them to here it from me that I was resigning,” Haynes says.
“I expect to hear great things out of them next season. I am going to miss them,” the coach adds.
Haynes was hired for the athletic director/head football coach position in 2006 to replace David Armstrong, who was reassigned after the 2005 football season.
The Eagles posted a 2-18 record the past two seasons.
Haynes’ contract runs until July 1, but the search for a replacement starts this week, Fairfield Independent School District superintendent Tony Price says.
The superintendent reports that the application period for the athletic director/head football coach position will close on Jan. 8 and expects a hiring decision to be made the second week in January.
In the interim, high school principal Von Wade is serving as athletic director.
Price reports that they plan to have a new athletic director in place and working on sports schedules well before new University Interscholastic League district alignments are announced next spring.
Haynes says he has not yet decided on his future plans.
“I’ll see what happens in the future. My deal is watching my daughter her senior year,” he says.
The coach’s daughter, Taylor, is a senior varsity Lady Eagles basketball player and runs track.
