Thursday's Internet Edition, August 07, 2008. academic meet
The District 19-AAA cross examination debate meet is set for Thursday and is part of the spring competition in March at Palestine. Points from the debate meet go toward the total in the district academic meet that FHS has won 17 times in the past 18 years, including the past 10 consecutive years. The district meet wraps up over three days of events the week of March 25. This Saturday FHS hosts the third annual Fairfield Invitational Academic Meet, a practice event for district. FHS English teacher Betty Gentry, who serves as coordinator for University Interscholastic League academic events, reports that schools from as far away as Beaumont will compete in Fairfield this weekend. Competition is in prose and poetry, informative and persuasive speaking, Lincoln-Douglas debate, cross-examination debate, ready writing, journalism, 1-act play, science, current issues and events, social studies, spelling and vocabulary, accounting, computer science, computer applications, literary criticism, mathematics, calculator and number sense. FHS teachers will serve as event judges and in other capacities for the academic meet, and student volunteers also are signed up to assist. Parents are providing food for a hospitality room during the invitational meet. The invitational meet starts at 8 a.m. and runs until 6 p.m. |
