Winners were recently announced in the annual conservation poster and essay contest sponsored by the Freestone County Soil and Water Conservation District.
The poster contest drew 309 entries and the essay, 375 entries with students from Dew, Fairfield, Teague and Wortham participating in one or both of the contests.
Award ribbons were presented to first place poster winners in kindergarten and first grade and a cash award of $20 for first place, $15 for second place and $10 for third place was given to the poster winners for fourth through sixth grades.
Cash awards of the same amount were also given to the essay winners in two age divisions: 13 and under, and 14-18.
The top three overall winners in the three divisions received $25 for first place, $20 for second place and $15 for third place.
Those top three posters and six essays qualified to advance to the area level. They included, in the essay contest, age 13 and under: Keil Meredith of Fairfield, first place; Callie Cherry of Fairfield, second place; and Katiliyn McDonald of Fairfield, third place.
Essay, age 14-18: Cory Black of Fairfield, first place; and Lauren Evans of Teague, second place; and Chandler Baggerly of Teague, third place.
Poster contest, Emily Walker of Teague, first place; Sreynha Chab of Fairfield, second place; and Katie Looney of Wortham, third place.
Sponsoring the contest were a number of area banks, including AgriLand Farm Credit Services, Bank of Fairfield, First National Bank of Fairfield, Wells Fargo Bank, Farmers State Bank of Wortham and Fairfield, The Donie Bank, Citizens National Bank and Freestone Credit Union.
Judging committee members included David Polk, District Conservationist, with the USDA and NRCS; Brent Jones, branch manager, Farmers State Bank of Wortham; and John Stone and Ben McNally, soil conservationists, NRCS.
Board chairman Don Schill of the Freestone County Soil and Water Conservation District expressed appreciation to all the teachers and parents who encouraged the students to participate in the contest.
