Trash collection
sites considered

STUDENTS IN THE ENGLISH as a second language program at Fairfield high school “shadowed” business managers and owners last week to improve their language skills and learn about different jobs. - As a convenience to Freestone county rural residents, county commissioners are taking a look at opening solid waste collection sites at three more locations.
The county currently operates a solid waste trash site at Dew, open six days a week to all residents. About the only restriction at the site is a prohibition against dumping commercial trash.
Although the Dew site is open to all county residents, it is not especially convenient to everyone.
Because of that, commissioners are looking at opening and staffing solid waste facilities at locations throughout the county.
Commissioners discussed sites in Fairfield, Teague and Streetman last week and County Judge Linda Grant is going to visit with officials from those communities on the feasibility of opening the facilities.
With recent wet weather, commissioners voted to lift a ban on rural burning enacted earlier in the month.
The court reviewed bids for a fire tanker truck sought by Wortham Volunteer Fire Department prior to agreeing to participate in the purchase by providing matching funds as required in a grant received by the department.
The tanker truck will be purchased for $190,595 from Deep South, the lowest of four bidders received.
In addition to a county match, the precinct four road and bridge department will provide $22,595 toward the purchase.
Commissioners authorized the release of 9-1-1 emergency system information to Heart of Texas Council of Governments so that Freestone county can join a regional emergency notification system.
The regional system, which will give emergency notice of dangerous weather, evacuation orders, chemical spills, Amber Alert and water boiling orders, includes Freestone, Limestone, Hill, Falls and Bosque counties.
A 3-year lease agreement with East Texas Copy Systems was approved for a copy machine for Freestone County Senior Services. Cost to lease the machine is $83 per month.
Senior Services director Kathy Earley was instructed by the court to get repair and replacement costs for a walk-in freezer at the Fairfield Senior Center so that a decision can be made to get the equipment operating properly.
