Winners honored at VFW banquet

FAIRFIELD TEACHERS Rodney Gillen-Hall and Deborah Hamilton were honored as “Teachers of the Year” during a banquet at the Fairfield VFW.
- Students from Fairfield, Teague and Wortham participated in the Patriot’s Pen essay contest and Voice of Democracy speech contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The students who placed in the contest were honored at a banquet hosted by the Fairfield VFW last Friday.
The VFW received 287 essays written on the theme of “Why I Am An American Patriot” and selected four winners from each school.
From Fairfield, essay winners include Shannon K. Chappell, first place; Micah T. Hubbert, first place; Brett Wilson, second place; and Sarah A. Rhoads, third place.
In Teague, the winning essays were submitted by Katie Burleson, first place; David Landon Lancaster, first place; Sadie Nicole Soliz, second place; and Courtney N. Watson, third place.
Essay winners from Wortham are J.D. Robinson, first place; Kenzie Sessions, first place; Dayna Craig, second place; and Rowan Miller, third place.
The theme for this year’s Voice of Democracy speech contest was “My Role in Honoring America’s Veterans.”
Six students from Fairfield were honored by the Fairfield VFW. They are Reagan Amick, first place; Adam Lewis, second place; Kirra Ibarra, third place; Kendall Villarreal, fourth place; Cheyenne Robinson, fifth place; and Torian Schauwecker, sixth place.
In Teague and Wortham three winners were chosen from each school.
From Teague, they are Chelsea Eckley, first place; Chandler Baggerly, second place; and Anna Marie Madden, third place; and from Wortham, Amber Bush, first place; Ciara Carballo, second place; and Amber Reece, third place.
The VFW also honored teachers Rodney Gillen-Hall and Deborah Hamilton by presenting them with the “Teacher of the Year” award.
Gillen-Hall teaches Texas history at Fairfield junior high and Mrs. Hamilton teaches biology at Fairfield high school.
