For the first time since 1984, the Fairfield Eagles will not be in the same University Interscholastic League competitive district with the Mexia Blackcats and Groesbeck Goats.
New alignments for Texas schools were announced Friday morning by the UIL and will be in place for two years.
Starting next fall the Eagles will compete in District 20-AAA with Athens, Brownsboro, Crockett, Palestine and Palestine Westwood.
“I don’t know anything about any of them,” new Fairfield head football coach and athletic director Darrell Piske says. “We can’t worry about them. All we can worry about is the Fairfield Eagles.”
Piske was hired last month, coming from Valley Mills in Class A.
For the past two years, Fairfield has been aligned in District 19-AAA with Groesbeck, Madisonville, Mexia, Palestine and Palestine Westwood.
Class AAA consists of schools with 490-979 students and the district in which the Eagles will compete is evenly divided between big and small schools.
Palestine tops the list with 925 students in high school, followed by Athens with 922 and Brownsboro with 820, according to Texas Education Agency figures.
Fairfield high school boasts 530 students, Palestine Westwood has 505 and Crockett is smallest with 452.
On the pre-district football schedule next fall are China Spring, Ferris, Gatesville, Rusk and Crandall.
Piske is working out schedules this week for the 2008 football season.
Groesbeck and Mexia remain in District 19-AAA, but it is changed with the addition of Lorena, Robinson, Waco Connally and Waco LaVega.
Teams from districts 19 and 20 will meet in bi-district sports competition the next two years.
Madisonville moves to District 24-AAA with Bryan Rudder, Caldwell, Cameron Yoe, Navasota, Rockdale and Taylor.
Elsewhere in Freestone county, the Teague Lions will play the next two years in District 20-AA with Franklin, Hearne, Leon, Marlin and Rosebud-Lott.
The Wortham Bulldogs are in district 21-A with Axtell, Dawson, Frost, Hubbard, Italy and Itaska.
