The Lady Eagles finish the year with a 21-6-2 overall record, including a perfect 10 mark in District 19-AAA games that provided the district championship title. Fairfield, by virtue of the district crown, received a bye in the bi-district playoff round and matched up with Lorena at Baylor Getterman Stadium. The FHS squad started well when shortstop Kayse Kirgan reached base with a 1-out single in the first inning, advanced to third on a single to center field by catcher Becca Lyles and scored on a throwing error by the Lorena third baseman. The Lady Eagles would have recorded a second run in the inning on sacrifice fly to right field by Shelby Bayless, but the umpire ruled that Miss Lyles left third base early. Lorena struck back in the top of the second when FHS pitcher Courtney Nelson walked a batter, and a throwing error allowed two runs. A throw to first base sailed over Lady Eagles first baseman Caitlin Neal’s head and when right fielder Mia Mayo ran forward as a backup, the ball scooted up the fence past her. The Lady Leopards never really threatened after that, getting just one runner past first base in their next four at-bats. Fairfield, for its part, hit the ball well but the hits rolled and flew directly two the opposing team members. Just six Lady Eagles struck out through 25 trips to the batter’s box. Miss Kirgan recorded a second single in the sixth inning and designated hitter Riley Davidson singled in the fifth—-Fairfield got just three clean hits in the game. Aside from the second inning error, the Fairfield squad played the rest of the game clean. The Lady Leopards were able to get their bats on the ball against Miss Nelson, but Lady Eagles made up for that with fielding, putting out 16 batters. Miss Nelson went the distance, striking out two, issuing five walks and surrendering two runs and two hits. Winning pitcher Taylor Kelm struck out six and gave up three hits and one run. The Lady Eagles lose only player, Miss McAdams, to graduation this year. |
