Lady Eagles boost record to 16-1

- The Fairfield high school Lady Eagles varsity basketball team ran its record to 16-1 last week with victories over Hearne and Tarkington.
The Lady Eagles take time off from action this week, returning to the court Dec. 27-28 to play the Cameron Tournament.
“We made it to the break without any injuries,” coach Tommy Fadal says. “We’re just trying to get ready for district, get focused for district.”
Fairfield jumped on Hearne early, taking a 15-6 lead the first period, and added seven points the second period for a 22-15 lead at intermission.
The team upped its output to 17 points the third period and closed with another dozen, giving up seven and 11, for a 51-33 win.
“Connally is a decent team. They were 10-2 when the came in,” coach Tommy Fadal says. “Ironically, their last loss was to us in November.”
Fadal reports that the deciding factor in the game was the Lady Eagles control of the boards—-the team grabbed 35 rebounds, 11 of those on offense.
Leading rebounder, with 10, was Choicetta McMillian, while Courtney Morton grabbed six.
Miss McMillian also scored 23 points and stole the ball eight times to lead the team.
Others scoring were: Denise Brown, 7; Joye McElroy, 7; Taylor Haynes, 6; Morton, 4; Josh Reeves, 2; and Barvion Wyatt, 2.
The Lady Eagles shot 74 percent from the free throw line, making 14 of 19 attempts.
Fairfield dominated Tarkington from the opening tip-off, scoring 41 points the first half and giving up just 13.
In the second half, the Lady Eagles slowed their offensive output to 18 points and held Tarkington to 13 for a 59-26 win.
“They are young and rebuilding,” Fadal says of Tarkington.
Leading scorer for Fairfield was Miss McMillian, 23 points, who was joined in double digits by Raven Henry, 10 points.
“Raven Henry did a good job for us coming off the bench,” Fadal says.
“All 11 kids got to play and contribute some,” he adds.
Others scoring were: Haynes, 8; Sarah Linton, 6; Courtney Morton, 4; Brown, 4; and Wyatt, 4.
From long range, Misses Linton and McMillian each made a pair of treys.
The Lady Eagles grabbed 52 rebounds in the contest, led by Miss McMillian with nine, and Miss McElroy, seven.
Fairfield shot just 33 percent from the free throw line, making three of nine tries.
In addition to playing the Cameron Tournament next week, the Lady Eagles play at Robinson on New Year’s Eve.
District 19-AAA action starts Jan. 4 when the Lady Eagles host the Madisonville Lady Mustangs.
The Fairfield jv squad played Connally early last week and came away with a decisive 33-15 victory.
“This was a good win for these girls,” coach LaDonna Brackens says.
“We have a lot of injuries this year. They needed this win to perk them back up,” she adds.
The Lady Eagles took a 12-4 lead the first period and added eight points the second period for a 20-11 advantage at half-time.
Fairfield jv cagers scored another 13 points in the second half and gave up four for the win.
Scoring for the jv were: O.J. Edwards, 9; Kristie Brewer, 6; Bre West, 6; Mia Mayo, 4; Tanetta Coleman, 4; Gabby Rimes, 2; and Sally Taylor, 2.
The team shot 50 percent from the free throw line, making three of six attempts.
In freshmen action, the Lady Eagles jumped out to a 10-2 lead the first period and hit for a dozen in the second period for a 22-6 lead at intermission.
Fairfield added 12 points in the third period and 13 in the fourth, giving up six in each, to win 47-20.
“The girls did a good job on offense. We had nine of 11 players contribute points,” coach Dennis Johnson says.
Scoring leaders were Sierra Henry, 16 points, and Keanna Cox, 10 points.
Best defensive players were Alysse Sleziak and Patty Perez, top rebounders were Olivia Gallegos and Krystal Rischer, and best all-around was Miss Cox.
